The following are features in Illustrator CS4 that enable new ways of working so you can get the creative results you’re after more efficiently and deliver designs more easily, anywhere.

Multiple artboards
Define working areas of varying sizes with complete freedom, all within one document. Work on a variety of projects in a single file and share settings and content across designs. You no longer need to use page tiling to create multipage PDF files, and you can arrange up to 100 artboards of different sizes any way you want–tiled, overlapping or freeform. You can even create an artboard inside an artboard to easily export just a piece of a composition.

Multiple artboards provide the most powerful way yet to organize projects with multiple pages or diverse outputs. Sharing objects, styles, and output settings is a great time-saver, and you can apply symbols or test color variations with Live Color while viewing artwork in multiple contexts. Quickly set up bleeds and crop marks, and choose to show video-safe areas using preset profiles.

Export your artboards in any supported file format as a series of files that are automatically numbered in sequence, or save as a single, multipage PDF file–your choice.

Transparency in gradients
Create a gradient of many colors and define the opacity of any or all individual colors assigned to your color stops. Transparency within a gradient simplifies creating interaction between layers and enables easy mixing and knockouts. Use transparency to create cover-up fades or to reveal underlying objects or images. For example, make a rainbow gradient on one object, and then simply set the blue gradient slider or color stop to 0% opacity level to show what’s underneath.

You can even apply multiple fills to a single object, such as a pattern fill overlaid with transparent gradients, to create highlights and shadows that simulate the fabric of a draped garment. In the Appearances panel, simply apply additional fills and then use the Gradient tool to define opacities. And change the shape of that object as much as you want–all of your fills will follow along.

Transparency in gradients also enhances work between Illustrator and other Creative Suite 4 components in which transparency and gradients behave in a similar fashion, such as Adobe Photoshop CS4 Extended, Adobe Flash CS4 Professional, and Adobe Fireworks CS4 software.

Gradients exposed
On-object interaction plus new elliptical gradients exposes the power of gradients in Illustrator CS4. The new controls enable fast adjustment with minimum interruption of your train of thought–no need to shift your attention to the Gradient panel.

Work with gradients right on your object with immediate visual feedback. Color sliders and swatches appear on your selected object, with gradient stops that you can drag along the gradient bar. You can add and delete gradient stops and set the angle and position of the gradient by clicking directly on the controls.

Radial gradients are enhanced with the new ability to set dimensions independently, to create an elliptical gradient of any proportion.

Blob Brush tool
The Blob Brush tool generates a clean, filled, vector shape while you sketch, even when strokes overlap, merging your paths naturally into a single object that’s easily selected and edited. Now, when you draw, you don’t get the typical jumble of paths, you get an outlined and filled shape–no expansion or Pathfinder tools required. And you can customize how your drawing flows together, choosing options for stroke character and pressure sensitivity.

Drawing with the Blob brush is a truly painterly, fluid way to create vector forms, especially when used in combination with the Eraser and Smooth tools. Use these tools together–alternately stroking and erasing–to perfect your silhouette to get a single, smooth outline without ever needing to expand paths or use the Pathfinder panel.

Tabbed document view
With multiple open documents in a tabbed view, you can bring windows to the front with one click. Tabbed documents are also spring-loaded for easy copying and pasting. Simply drag a selection from your window onto a document tab, and that document pops to the front so you can paste your selection where you want. And, you can arrange multiple document windows in a tiled or cascaded view for easy visual comparison and even faster copying across documents.

Spring-loaded panels
Get to your panels even more quickly with springloading. Panels now expand automatically when you drag an object on top of the panel icon.

Practical Smart Guides
Smart Guides are more intuitive and practical, with an unobtrusive look and new behaviors, such as alignment to objects on the artboard rather than to the cursor. New on-object readouts tell you exactly where you are, without your having to shift focus away from your work.

Isolation Mode advances
Isolation Mode now supports more object types, including compound paths, gradient mesh objects, images, and clipping masks. You can isolate a single object as well as top-level layers. Control your view while in Isolation Mode with new support for Outline View and with quick locking and hiding of objects. It’s now easy to add new objects to a particular place in a stacking order, reducing the need for the Paste In Front/Back and Arrange commands.

Check the new iconic breadcrumbs to see at a glance what type of object you’re editing. The icons symbolize Layer, Group, Symbol, Path, and Image. The labels in the breadcrumbs are clickable so you can quickly navigate through your layers and objects. When you’re finished working in Isolation Mode, exit using the Escape key.

In-panel appearance editing
Edit multiple object characteristics directly in the Appearance panel. This improved panel shows attributes for single and multiple objects, such as fill or stroke color, which you can edit by simply clicking on the attribute–even when it’s shared among objects.

Another new function in the Appearance panel is the ability to control the display of individual attributes. You can simply click the eye icon to turn off a complex effect that must be re-rendered with every move, so that you can work faster and keep your creative momentum going.

And if you wish to select all objects in your artwork that have certain attributes, you can use a new Same Appearance Attribute option in the Select menu. Once you have selected objects with at least one common attribute, you can edit that attribute in the Appearance panel and see immediate results on all the objects at once.

The power of the new Appearance panel lies in centralization of control and streamlining of your workspace. You no longer need to keep multiple panels open to apply and edit fills, strokes, complex attributes, and more. You can even copy and paste within the panel, so adding attributes to any object is fast and simple.

Refined graphic styles
Apply sets of attributes to objects and text as a single graphic style, layering and combining styles for unique effects. The Graphic Styles panel provides new functionality that includes an option to preview all your styles on the seleted object or group of objects. It’s now easy to choose a style without having to actually apply it.

The Graphic Styles panel and the Appearance panel work hand in hand, supporting creation of complex styles that can be quickly applied without destroying an object’s original appearance. Add a new style while pressing the Option key (Mac) or the Alt key (Windows) and observe that it doesn’t replace the object’s existing appearance. To see all the attributes that make a graphic style, click on the style and find its attributes listed in the Appearance panel–each easily edited.

Illustrator CS4 makes graphic styles even more attractive with a new library of prebuilt styles to jump-start your creative exploration. New libraries include sets of effects such as pre-set blurs and drop shadows that you can add without affecting fills. And, of course, you can generate your own libraries of graphic styles that you can use again and again.

Clipping masks demystified
Work with masks more easily, thanks to true WYSIWYG behavior. Now, when the clipping object or group is selected, you will see only the clipped area (the visible parts of your objects). Edit the masking object in Isolation Mode or choose to make it visible using the Clipping Path menu options. Plus, with the buttons in the Control panel for Edit Clipping Paths and Edit Contents, you have truly intuitive choices for viewing and editing both your masks and masked objects.

Separations preview
Help ensure flawless printing using the new Separations Preview panel. Avoid color output surprises such as unexpected spot colors, unwanted overprinting, overprints that don’t overprint, white overprinting, and CMYK blacks in text and placed files. The Separations Preview panel displays a list of spot and process colors; you can choose to display individual colors for previewing color separations onscreen. Illustrator CS4 continues the tradition of improving print support so you can deliver artwork that prints more reliably than ever.

Adobe Illustrator CS4 Upgrade [Mac] CustomerReview

I upgraded to CS4 because Apple’s OS Leopard doesn’t officially support my older CS2 version. To be honest, the earlier version had nearly everything that I needed in a vector program. I was disappointed that Adobe no longer supplies a paper manual but they do offer one month’s access to Lynda.com tutorials, which have probably helped me more than a manual would have. There are several dozen tutorials by Deke McClelland which are very good (I still miss not having a manual nearby to thumb through). I also used the Illustrator CS2 “WOW” book which has lots of tips and techniques and samples of some great effects that are possible with Illustrator (the CS4 version is not yet published). I had been using Freehand up through version 9 and switched to Illustrator when Adobe bought Macromedia. I still have trouble with the switch and keep hoping that Adobe will adopt some of Freehand’s features. For example, Freehand’s one selection tool was much easier to use and did everything that Illustrator’s three separate selection tools accomplish. But the longer I use Illustrator, the easier it gets and the more I like it. Bold, graphic images are easy to create and when combined with raster art, there are no limits to what’s possible.

Looking at those techniques most useful to print and Web designers, and learning not just how to carry them out but the reasons behind each stage, readers will find out more than just which tool or filter does what. Once understanding is achieved, the author promises, creativity and efficiency levels soar.

This is not a special-effects cookbook, filled with chrome highlighting or other slick tricks, but it does show all the essential production techniques. For example, there are sections on color correcting, using creative effects like working with blending modes, and creating Web content like banners and animations. Nor is this a tutorial-based book that simulates a classroom at home, although the pages are rich with examples, screen shots, and professional-quality images that clearly mimic common Photoshop problems (like trying to silhouette strands of hair). And all sample images are on the CD-ROM for the hands-on experience of following along on the computer. In addition, the CD-ROM has bonus chapter supplements that show even more techniques.

But it’s the author’s non-technical approach to explaining how Photoshop works that makes the difference between this and so many other similar how-to books. He uses stories and metaphors to get to “why would I want to do that” and not just “how do I do that.” For example, he quickly gets to the bottom of the sponge tool by saying it works like a sponge full of bleach, soaking up the color wherever you paint with it (or doing the exact opposite if the blending mode is set to Saturate). And, at the end of each chapter, he includes a list of the official technical terms so that you can talk like a pro now that you have the skills of one. –Angelynn Grant

I see a lot of complaints from advanced users saying the books is just a re-write of the previous. Well for one thing, there usually are not that many changes from one version of photoshop to the next, and two, they obviously haven’t been to Ben Willmore’s website since he constantly adds new techniques and tutorials for the experienced user. If you want the best “how to” book for photoshop then look no further. Instead of telling you how he did some complex picture with techno babble, he explains the purpose, history, and the use of all the tools, and this is the most important part, in plain English. Only after he explains how to use the tools does you give some examples of their use. The only thing he assumes is that you have no clue about any of the features and goes into great detail. Ben Willmore is the equivalent to those teachers we all have had now and then that make the process of learning fun and nearly painless.

If you are already an advanced user you’ll find very little that is new to you, but if you are a brand new or intermediate then you are missing out on a great resource if you pass this book by.

Now that version 10 of Corel’s powerful, popular drawing suite CorelDRAW has taken hold, one might expect the company to phase out CorelDRAW 9. Instead, Corel has recycled its engine into CorelDRAW Essentials, a powerful pair of creation and editing programs available at an attractive, sub-0 price. The retail package is generous, with two image-editing programs, a fat and friendly instruction manual, tons of clip art, convenient HTML-based documentation, and a pair of Osborne/McGraw-Hill guides in PDF format.

The cornerstone of Essentials is CorelDRAW 9, a robust illustration tool. With its rich interface, users can quickly create simple or complex object-based drawings. The extensive tool set contains everything from simple freehand pens and ellipse tools to a versatile Bézier tool, complex fill tools, a text editor, and more.

Lines and shapes are treated as vector objects, which means they’re completely dynamic. CorelDRAW lets the user edit, group, bend, transform, and otherwise manipulate each object. An object manager makes it easy to keep track of scores or hundreds of lines, curves, and shapes in even the most complex drawings.

For bitmap editing, the package includes Corel PHOTO-PAINT, which on its own would be a commendable program. Its relatively small number of tools (compared to Photoshop Elements and Paint Shop Pro 7) is highly customizable. PHOTO- PAINT’s paint tool, for instance, is so adjustable that users can create virtually any kind of brush, sprayer, or other applicator they desire.

The program also includes more pedestrian–but still welcome–picture effects. Lens and distortion effects, for instance, let users apply cylindrical, spherical, and other diffusive warps to their images. Users can sharpen and soften images, adjust colors and gamma, and tweak their pictures in dozens of other ways. PHOTO-PAINT can even split images into distinct color channels, including CMYK.

CorelDRAW and PHOTO-PAINT are tightly integrated, using their relative strengths to complement each other, and together they comprise a powerful one-two punch of full-featured image manipulation. Even though there’s little feature overlap between the two, they share a few welcome conveniences–among them, step-by-step exporters that allow users to create HTML and PDF files out of their creations.

With a heaping slab of user friendliness, CorelDRAW Essentials is one of the easiest drawing programs to master. However, that doesn’t mean it’s simplistic; folks who can’t quite master Windows Paint will find it daunting. Alternately, professional graphics designers, layout artists, and other veterans of the full-scale CorelDRAW suites will miss certain high-end layout features. Still, if you’re looking for an affordable, yet sophisticated image-editing package, CorelDRAW Essentials is a good bet. –Joel Durham, Jr.

CorelDraw Essentials CustomerReview

I have Windows XP and did not want to shell out tons on a graphics program. Coreldraw Essentials fit the bill. It provides features found in far more sophisticated software without the nasty price tag. Be sure that you update your software on the web after installing the product if you have XP!
This program has many cool features found in Corel 9.0 and has been especially adapted for us non-professional types that want to draw pictures and/or edit photos on our home computer. Unless you are very good at computer graphics, this is a great program at a great price. I recommend Coreldraw Essentials.

Adobe Photoshop CS3 Windows English Retail CustomerReview

Photoshop CS3 for professional photo editing done. I would have 5 stars, if not missing some improvements given. The memory management does not function automatically, nor does it suggest a certain optimal setting. We guess the user and to try what is best. It seems that Photoshop runs fastest if you give it about 50% of the total system RAM. I always meet with the same problem with CS3 and Vista, as with older versions of Photoshop on older operating systems. When opening a file ona time, edit, save, next, and so on, it seems to clog up the computer after a while, and I need to close and re-start Photoshop. I'm working with files hundreds of megabytes large. I recommend to look at a chart of keyboard shortcuts that can save you tons of time. For example, switch, zoom in / out, brush, windows, application switch, history a step back.

The latest release of Creative Suite 4 Design Premium extends way beyond feature-packed new versions of InDesign, Photoshop Extended, Illustrator, Flash Professional, Dreamweaver, and Acrobat Pro. Streamline everyday tasks
Valuable new features in your favorite tools support smoother, more efficient workflows and let you stay focused on the all-important creative process. In Illustrator CS4, lay out and design multi-part projects using up to 100 variable-sized artboards in a single document; save multiple artboards in a single, multipage PDF file or export them in one step as sequentially numbered files in any supported file format; easily create complex vector shapes with the new Blob Brush tool; and specify transparent colors within gradients to create and fine-tune subtle interactions between objects.

Two new panels in Photoshop CS4 Extended provide convenient yet exacting creative control: The Adjustments panel bypasses dialog boxes and allows direct, nondestructive editing without altering or losing your original image, and the Masks panel speeds creating and fine-tuning pixel and vector masks for application of special effects. What’s more–a top request from Photoshop users–you can now rotate the canvas so that you can work on any image from any angle.

In InDesign CS4, use the redesigned Links panel to easily find, manage, and organize placed files; quickly scan a customizable selection of linked-file attributes; and identify files by scanning crystal-clear thumbnails instead of confusing filenames. For a fresh perspective on an InDesign layout or to tweak unconventional design elements, rotate the spread in 90-degree increments. Use convenient new Smart Guides in InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Fireworks to display information such as height, width, X and Y coordinates, and rotation and shear angles–as you drag–so that you can precisely position or resize objects. Design Premium offers improved speed and accuracy so you can be more productive than ever before.

Use your existing expertise as a foundation for web, interactive, and mobile design
The smoothly integrated software in Creative Suite 4 Design Premium lets you use work created in the familiar environments of InDesign, Photoshop, or Illustrator as a platform for experimenting with new media and delivery channels. Here’s one example of a highly efficient workflow for developing a website or rich interactive application: Open Photoshop or Illustrator layered artwork in Fireworks to begin building a prototype, and continue to refine high-quality typographic elements thanks to the newly incorporated Adobe text engine. To add Flash components or to produce and publish web pages, export the Fireworks prototype as a CSS-based layout and import it into Flash or Dreamweaver. Whether for websites or for Flash, Flex¨, HTML, or Adobe AIR applications, you can move from concept to mock-up to prototype to finished product while retaining every modification you make from one step to the next.

Another possibility–combine the page layout and typographic strengths of InDesign with the interactivity of Flash to create compelling dynamic documents. Start with an InDesign layout that incorporates superior typography, multiple columns, long text flows, and rich graphics, and export it in XFL format (the internal file format that allows for improved integration within the Creative Suite 4 family). When you open the document in Flash, not only will you see unparalleled fidelity between the InDesign and Flash versions, you can also freely edit text and graphics. This new integration between InDesign and Flash lets designers and developers collaborate closely, each using their favorite tools, to produce engaging online reading experiences.

A third alternative–quickly create attention-getting brochures and datasheets by adding dynamic buttons and page transitions to a layout in InDesign and then exporting it as a SWF file for playback with Adobe Flash Player.

Finally, new visual design features in both Flash and Dreamweaver make it easier than ever for designers who shun code to produce engaging web, interactive, and mobile designs.

Set your ideas in motion with video and animation
If you’ve ever wanted to venture into animation and interactive design, now’s the time. New object-based animation makes designing in Flash more straightforward and similar to working with other Adobe creative applications. This enhanced ease of use reduces the learning curve for print designers accustomed to working with static design elements. Building a basic animation now takes two stunningly simple steps: Right-click an object on the stage and choose Create Motion Tween, and then move the object. Motion paths are generated automatically and can be easily edited using familiar Bezier curves. What’s more, entire animations can be moved to new locations in a single step, and adjusting object location, rotation, and scale is as simple as grabÐmoveÐrelease. New Motion Editor and Motion Presets panels provide quick and exacting control over minute details, while advanced tools for creating complex motion effects, applying decorative patterns, and animating 2D objects in 3D space offer more creative options for designers and developers alike. If you incorporate video or animation into your web and mobile designs, you’ll appreciate being able to paint, retouch, and do pixel-level editing on every frame of a movie file in Photoshop–especially with a new audio playback feature that makes it easier to sync the visual effects to the audio track.

Capture attention with stunning 2D and 3D images
Photoshop CS4 Extended enables everything from streamlining everyday tasks to tackling new creative possibilities. In addition to enjoying the convenient new Adjustments and Masks panels and the canvas rotation feature described above, you can now zoom and pan freely without delay or distortion, and paint more quickly and smoothly. Refine images using enhanced Dodge, Burn, and Sponge tools that allow you to lighten or darken specific areas while preserving natural-looking overall tone and color. Experiment with advanced compositing enhancements, including 360-degree spherical panoramas, vignette correction, expanded depth-of-field adjustments, and more.

Powerful new 3D painting and compositing features make editing, enhancing, and manipulating 3D images both exciting and easy. Convert 2D images to common 3D shapes such as cubes, cylinders, or spheres. Paint directly on 3D models with all of the powerful Photoshop image-editing tools, and see the results immediately. Create print-quality 3D product shots that can be merged into consistently scaled, aligned, and lighted composite images, or experiment with 3D logos that can be rotated in space while being moved along an animation path.

Deliver compelling content to mobile devices worldwide
Given the skyrocketing use of mobile devices around the world, getting up to speed with mobile design offers both rapidly expanding business opportunities and intriguing creative challenges. Adobe Device Central CS4 software, a visual testing tool that works with content from most Creative Suite 4 components, makes developing mobile designs easier and faster–even if you’re brand new to this emerging creative discipline. Develop content with your favorite Adobe creative tool, and then use Device Central to preview and test it on an extensive selection of devices under a variety of simulated real-life conditions. Whether you’re creating wallpapers, screensavers, or even mobile websites, blogs, or “advergames,” Device Central enables you to extend your workflow to successfully incorporate high-quality mobile content into cross-media campaigns.

New and enhanced features in Device Central CS4 include an automatically updated online device library, automated testing on multiple devices, simulation of network performance impact on user experience, and improved video-packaging tools. Device Central also includes new tools for simplifying project management, collaboration, and deployment of content to mobile phones, as well as streamlined workflows for handling mobile video.

Or use an interactive color wheel that supports standard harmony rules to develop your own color themes that you can save, move to your Swatches panel, and upload to share with others. Acrobat.com
Use Acrobat.com services with Acrobat to store and share large documents, collect form data, and review documents with anyone, anywhere. Thanks to the connection between one of the Acrobat.com services, Adobe ConnectNow, and Creative Suite 4 Design Premium, you can meet live over the web to share your screen, present creative concepts and ideas, and brainstorm with up to two online guests for no additional service charge. To share your screen with colleagues and clients, choose File > Share My Screen from Adobe CS4 components, such as Photoshop CS4 Extended or Flash CS4 Professional, or choose File > Collaborate > Share My Screen from Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro. Guests can then see your desktop on their screens as you work. You can exchange ideas using the chat pod, add a live video or audio feed, or use the Whiteboard feature to enable guests to comment on content.

You can even temporarily hand over control of the screen to a guest to collaborate on a file. I had to upgrade to Photoshop and Illustrator, but WOW, what make a difference a few upgrades to voice!
Had CS2 and had enjoyed, but that some limitations. CS4 healing and much more. All the additional software to help bolster our needs for the Web and Internet presence. The Design Premium package is for all of us, we need to do the right things.
